Removal Action activities are continuing. In general, contaminated water and oil is still being pumped from basement and vault areas to assist the OSC to identify connections between the Site and area drainage systems. Additionally, the City of Bluefield Sanitary Board assisted with identification of drainage systems using specialized equipment.
The ERRS contractor uncovered the drainage pipe leading from the former degreaser tank vault area sump and drain (located in former Crane Shop 2 Area 1d of the Site). The drain outlet pipe headed west and then bent towards the westside storm drain. ERRS discontinued excavation at the foundation of the former boiler/locker room building in the northwest corner of the Site.
The drums were removed from the basement. The drums contained unknown solids, resin-like materials, and oil. Many drums were empty or near empty. The drums were in extremely poor condition and some of the contents discharged into the basement.
The ERRS continued removal of contaminated water from the former compressor room and adjacent vault.
The storm inlet drop box which accepts drainage from the 36 inch diameter drop box located along the western alley adjacent to the Site (via a storm grate at the western gate) was assessed by the City of Bluefield. The drop box was found to be apporoximately 15 feet deep. The destination of the discharge is yet unknown. As a precautionary measure, the materials removed from the drop box were placed on the Site and allowed to drain into the basement. The solid materials will be drummed. The liquids will be pumped into the on-Site treatment/containment system.
Water samples were collected from the on-Site containment system for analysis. The analysis will assist determine if these waters can be discharged locally or transported off-Site for disposal.
The START contractor conducted sampling of waters moving through area storm drains and within local surface waters.
The City of Bluefield Sanitary Board assisted in the assessment of drains. The suspected north-south trending old sanitary drain located in former High Voltage was verified connected to the area sanitary system through use of TV and dye tracing. The sump and drain in Crane Shop #3 (Area 3b) was verified connected to the area storm water system through use of acoustical devices. The north-south trending suspected old storm water drain located in High Voltage was found to head southwest through the Site and then drop to an unknown destination at the edge of the Site. ERRS excavated this line, but we are still unable to verify its destination.
Continue removal of contaminated waters to enable evaluation of drainage from the Site. Continue to coordinate with City officials to determine how the drainage may be connected to the area drainage systems (storm and sanitary). Evaluate how drainage from the Site can be minimized.
