During this reporting period the intrusive activities commenced. These activities included the hand shovelling of previously flagged ferrous items within the Phase I radius and continued detection activities (mag and flag).
On Feb 21, the USACE notified the FOSC of the finding of an unfuzed 40mm projectile located in grid J6. The item appeared to have energetic material remaining in the body. It was placed in the magazine used for storage of MEC items which will require further disposal (MPPEH). Parts and pieces of "pop flares" were discovered also in grid A6. In the late afternoon an 81mm Mortar, (tentatively identified as an M43 A1) was uncovered in grid C6. The item appeared to be fuzed, and appeared to have an impinged cartridge in the tail section (fired?). This item will require detonation in place.
On Feb 23 the USACE contractor readied the site for demo of both the 81mm and 40mm items. At 1300 the demo team began setting up the demolition shot while the remaining teams were assigned to guard roads and ATK area in order to establish a safe zone for demolition operations. Safe zone was verified clear at approximately 1328. Detonation occurred at 1330. Demo holes were declared cleared by the site safety at 1340. Area was cleared of sandbag debris and teams resumed intrusive operation. Items destroyed during demolition operations included (1) 81mm practice mortar, (1) unfuzed 40mm and assorted MPPEH items. Once it was determined that the 81mm mortar was practice, the approved 236 ft exclusion zone was re-established.
Pre and post detonation soil samples were collected by START and forwarded to Ft. Meade for nitroaromatic and heavy metal analysis as per SAP.
On Feb 23, the USACE notified the FOSC via form CENAB 948 that grids B6, D6, E6 and L6 have passed government QA Inspection.
Continuation of investigative and intrusive activities within Phase 1 areas only. Site activities during daylight hours Monday thru Thursday only. 24 hour site security to be maintained by subbed security contractor. Communication and coordination with local commercial and residential entities during key site activities, such as site detonations. Close coordination with MDE and local officials.
EPA R3 press office maintained communication with local media leading up to and after detonation activities this week.
