Work Mission Statement:
Safely and efficiently investigate and remove Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC); Materials Potentially Possessing an Explosive Hazard (MPPEH), Munitions Debris (MD) and explosively contaminated soil(TNT) from the Elkton Farms Firehole Site, as defined in EPA's geophysical study.
During this reporting period the intrusive activities continued within grids: B4,G6,and K5,. These activities included magging and flagging of all metal items and the hand digging/shovelling of these flagged materials.
The FOSC continues to conduct a weekly conference call with MDE and USACE. This was instituted to assist with site communications.
The Rangemaster, originally scheduled to arrive on site on April 17 may not arrive now until either end of the week of April 24 or early May 1. The Rangemaster will be used to remotely scrape and sift Phase II grids. The USACE continues to work the Access Agreement issues with the three separate property owners.
On April 13, a large magnetic anomaly was detected in grid B4b. The anomaly is approximately 45'x 55' in area. This anomaly was not detected in the EM-61 geophysical survey. On April 20, FOSC and MDE, USACE and Infopro personnel performed inspection of this anomaly area. It was determined that this anomaly area is an undisturbed natural geology and therefore not containing man made munitions. It will therefore be considered as part of Phase 1, hand digging will proceed in this area.
FOSC recommended to USACE and INFOPRO SSO the following health and safety upgrade recommendations:
- rigorous enforcement of proper personnel decon and hygiene,
- installation of a decon station (tent) where workers can wash down during break and end of day and where workers can be protected from elements,
In addition, EPA will perform air sampling of particulate when high volume dust (during Rangemaster ops) occurs. This is planned for the week of May 8. Two week turnaround will assist with PPE recommendations.

FOSC continues to work with MDE regarding an outreach effort to the local community for munitions found on site. A fact sheet is being finalized to be followed by a press conference. FOSc is coordinating with State Fire Marshall and others to effect safe retrieval of these items.
On April 20, FOSC and RPM met with Farmer Sprye to provide compensation check. Sprye has initiated farming activities on Herron property.
