Work Mission Statement:
Safely and efficiently investigate and remove Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC); Materials Potentially Possessing an Explosive Hazard (MPPEH), Munitions Debris (MD) and explosively contaminated soil(TNT) from the Elkton Farms Firehole Site, as defined in EPA's geophysical study.
During this reporting period the intrusive activities continued within grids: I5,C2,F6 in Phase I zone and Rangemaster within Phase II and pit excavation with Taz also in Phase II.
On June 1, EPA conducted a progress meeting with the USACE, IPC, MDE and Start personnel. FOSC expressed dissatisfaction with the Rangemaster productivity. The USACE was in agreement and advised that they would request IPC to demobilize it. Rangemaster was subsequently deconned and demobed off site on June 7. The USACE advised EPA that its contractor had notified that budget was at or greater than 75%. FOSC expressed concern for last minute notification of such. After much discussion FOSC determined that IPC personnel be cut in half and that Taz, which was mobilized on June 1 would initiate pit excavation activities, as per SOW, in Phase II zone. By end of week, June 8, the Taz had excavated within pits 1 and 2. Building debris, slag and other metal was removed from the pits. Small quantities of MD/MPPH were found, however the identification of possible asbestos, within building tiles and pipe insulation, caused IPC to pull back and establish proper PPE and support guidance. IPC mobed its CIH to establish the guidance. Start to retrieve samples for positive identification. IPC to draft an ammendment to the SSHSP governing asbestos work in Level C ppe and to establish site work zones. Pending establishment of such, work will continue next week.
On June 8 The USACE informed the FOSC of the poor performance of the TAZ. Its effectiveness at segregating the MD from the soil was essentially zero due to soil constituency. The FOSC requested the USACE to fix the problem.
On 5/24 Start personnel erected air samplers for personnel inhalation of heavy metals due to rangemaster activities as per the Site Sampling Plan. Verbal results returned this week revealed that no levels were above risk based concentrations.

EPA/USACE scheduled meeting on June 13 to discuss status of project, funding, site communications and others. Work to continue in Phase II pits and Phase I grid magging and digging.
