Work Mission Statement:
Safely and efficiently investigate and remove Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC); Materials Potentially Possessing an Explosive Hazard (MPPEH), Munitions Debris (MD) and explosively contaminated soil(TNT) from the Elkton Farms Firehole Site, as defined in EPA's geophysical study.
During this reporting period the intrusive activities continued within grids: I5C,J4D,Taz anomaly 1, and 2. See map for reference to Taz anomaly areas: https://www.epaosc.net/sites/1299/files/taz_areas1.pdf As indicated in previous Polrep, the Taz would be used to excavate (per a written SOP) and sift anomaly areas of large clusters of metal debris which could be MPPEH. The above map depicts 4 distinct anomaly areas.
Demolition shots of MPPEH were conducted on July 18 and July 25. The following MPPEH were rendered safe during these shots: (2) 40mm HE Projectiles (1) 2mm HE Projectile (21) Parts of Thermite Bombs (2) Unknown Parts (96) Slap Flare Bases (59) 6” Burster Tubes
Weather conditions continue to hamper site activities. Extreme heat and thunderstorms contributed to limited work scheduling during this reporting period. The rain creates wet soils thereby hampering the Taz efforts within the anomaly areas.
IPC personnel continue to maintain the covering of the piles of the large pit piles.
The EPA FOSC continues to conduct project weekly conference calls, every Tuesday between EPA, MDE and USACE. EPA's Start contractor maintains the minutes of these discussions.
Priorities for the next reporting period are for IPC to complete as many grids/subgrids as possible focusing on open grids. The Taz will continue its support ops in the anomaly areas. Demobe of IPC and USACE is anticipated for August 24, 2006.

EPA will continue removal operations post USACE/IPC demobe on August 24, 2006. Towards this end the FOSC has initiated ERRs contractor selection for immediate specific tasks including site security/fencing and excavated soils/pile maintenance activities. The FOSC will initiate contractor selection activities for Phase II and remaining Phase I grids removal activities, during the fall months of 2006.
