Site Description
The Barker Chemical Company Site is located on approximately 140 acres lying north of the Withlacoochee River, south of County Road 40, west of U.S. Highway 19 (with a small portion lying east of U.S. Hwy 19) and east of Inglis city limits in Levy County, Florida.  A forty-four acre parcel owned by Florida Power Corporation (FPC) comprises the northwestern portion of the Site and the remainder of the Site is residential.

Current Activities
OSC on-scene to assist with contractor oversite and community outreach.  Property #1 excavation and backfill completed on 08-MAR-05.  Temporary relocation for property #1 is complete.  Property #2 excavation and backfilling completed on 22-JAN-05.  Property #3 excavation and backfilling completed on 23-FEB-05.  Property #4 excavation and backfilling completed on 24-MAR-05.  Temporary relocation for property #4 is complete.  

Excavated soils are stockpiled and treated with enviro-blend before disposal.  Treated soil is analyzed for TCLP metals before disposal.   Off-site disposal underway.  5,700 tons of contaminated soil has been shipped off-site to date.

START is on-site assisting with oversite and operation of the x-ray fluorescence for field analysis of soils.  The XRF is being used to assist with extent of excavation determinations.  START is also sampling additional residential yards as requests come in to EPA from homeowners.


Planned Removal Actions
Excavation activities for properties #5 and #6 scheduled to start in early May, based on analytical results.



Next Steps
START to continue sampling of additional properties as requests are received by EPA.  START and EPA Remedial completed the pre-remedial and removal extent of contamination sampling.

ERRS to continue contaminated soil excavation and disposal in May.   Phase #1 of the clean-up is complete.  Phase #2 activities to be based on results of extent of contamination samples.

EPA to continue oversite of excavation activities and to meet with concerned homeowners and city officials.

USACOE to continue relocation and reimbursement activities as needed
