The American Creosote site is an NPL site currently in the feasibilty study phase of RI/FS stage. Following the emergency response in August of 2005, the On-Scene Coordinator noted that the removal program has the authority to respond to the presence of creosote waste on the Site. The remedial program enlisted the support of the ERRB in order to address the ongoing threat to which they are unable to respond.

Site clearing activities have been focused in the vicinity of the former lagoon area. This area has been identified as the major source for the creosote continually being released via subsurface migration into the Creek. The following Site clearing activities have been completed to date:
- Approximately 500 linear feet at a width of 20 feet to the North from the intersection of Hughes Creek and Baremore Street
- Approximately 750 linear feet at a width of 20 feet to the North from Baremore Street at the east boundary of the former lagoon area
- Approximately 1000 linear feet between the east and west boundaries of the containment zone
- Initiated clearing at all areas in between
The proposed actions consist of securing access to potential exposure areas on the Site via signage and fencing, and stabilization of the two source areas. The containment of the source at the former lagoon area will consist of installation of a barrier system between the creek and the source area in order to mitigate the ongoing release into the creek. Once the seepage from the source is controlled; removal, treatment and disposal of creosote contaminated soils and sediments in the wood chip pile area and Hughes Creek may be addressed.
The crew will demobe from the Site on 12/21/06 to break for the holidays.
Upon return to the Site crusher run stone and geofabric will be placed on the roads for additional stability and support for the heavy equipment. Clearing will continue and sheet pile installation is expected to begin on 1/8/06.
The presence of several small tributaries off of Hughes Creek has increased the projected time for clearing activites. Crews are taking their time working around wet spots that will not support heavy equipment.
