From 1956 until approximately 1976, Industrial Metal Alloy Company, operated a solder manufacturing company at the Site. Taracorp, Inc., and its predecessor corporations leased the Site to operate a solder manufacturing facility at the Site from 1976 through 1993. The building and property was donated to the North Carolina School of the Arts Foundation, Inc. and is currently being used as a warehouse. NK Holdings, LLC was formed in 2005 and is the corporate successor to Taracorp, Inc.
The Site is bordered on the south and west by a residential area with and is bordered on the north and east ends by commercial and light industrial properties. The Site occupies approximately 1.06 acres, including one main building, an asphalt parking lot, and a wooded area at the rear of the Site running downhill to an unnamed tributary. The nearest residence is located adjacent to the site along the western edge.
NK Holdings signed an Agreement on Consent (AOC) with the EPA on September 20, 2006 to perform the cleanup of the Industrial Metal Alloys Site (IMACO). Brown and Caldwell of Atlanta, GA will serve as the technical representatives for the removal action.
Brown & Caldwell mobilized to the Site during the week of November 6, 2006 to collect sediment samples from the unnamed tributary that is located downhill and borders the site on the south. This event consisted of 16 total samples taken at levels of 0-3” and 3-6” with samples collected at deposition areas over a 1200’ length of the tributary. A single hotspot was located directly south of the Site at a depth of 3-6” with lead levels measured at 1140 mg/kg.
Brown & Caldwell returned to the Site during the week of November 27, 2006 to delineate an area around the hotspot located during the November 6 sampling event. One sample exceeded screening levels; the location was approximately 100 ft upstream and measured lead levels of 723 mg/kg at a depth of 0-3”.
- Sampling to determine the aerial and vertical extent of contamination on-site and on adjacent properties. (ONGOING)
- All soils and sediments on-site and on adjacent properties which are contaminated above RALs shall be excavated.
- All wastestreams shall be disposed of by appropriate measures as determined by the disposal profile.
- Restore areas which are disturbed by the removal action to their pre-removal state to the maximum extent practicable.
- Brown & Caldwell will submit a work-plan to be reviewed by EPA with approval from NCDENR
- Bid packages for the removal work will be delivered in January
