Site Description
Rogers Fork is a small perennial stream located in rural Estill County, Kentucky.  On November 15, 2006 KYDEP identified an unknown sheen on the stream and notifed EPA throug the the National Response Center.  The State hired a cleanup contactor and initiated containment efforts.  On November 16, 2006 DEP notified EPA that the source of the discharge was a bedrock fracture located upgrade from the stream.  The suspected source of the oil was an abandoned oil well.

OSC Art Smith was dispatched to investiated the source of the discharge and monitor cleanup efforts.


Current Activities
OSC Art Smith coordinated his response with KYDEP.  Due to safety considerations, as the fracture flowing oil is in a heavily wooded area with difficult terrain, EPA and DEP agreed to delay further investigation until 11/17/06.  Oil containment efforts would be maintained however.

Planned removal actions have not bee identified pending investigation results.  Oil containment efforts will be maintained.
