Pollution Report (POLREP) #1
Site Description
St. Johns Cemetery is located along Moose Hill Road in Monroe, CT. Prior to its current use as a cemetery, the property was used as an airport hanger. The Site covers an area of approximately 52.42 acres, is relatively flat and is located within a residential area. Drums and containers have been identified in wooded areas of the property located at a rear section of the cemetery. The incident is a non-oil spill type response, with the contaminants of concern being volatile organic compounds (VOC), semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOC), metals and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB).

Surrounding the Site are the following:
To the west and south: Residential homes and wooded areas;
To the east: Moose Hill Road and residential homes;
To the north: Residential homes and Shelton Road (Route 110).

Current Activities
15 drums have been removed and soil located near the drums has been excavated. The PCB-contaminated material will be sent to a hazardous waste facility for disposal during the week of December 15, 2008. A fence was erected around the area of contamination to deter trespassers.

Planned Removal Actions
Sampling of the soil will be conducted during the week of January 6, 2009 to determine the necessity of additional soil excavation. A GPR/Magnetometer will be used to survey the site for potential location of buried drums.

Next Steps
Coordinate removal activities with the Town of Monroe Public Health Dept and the CT DEP.
