Current Activities
The assessment of the conex boxes is continuing.  A large quantity of fire impinged smokeless and black powder has been removed from conex box #3 where the fire originated.  Segregation of the debris is continuing.

ERRS and START began the collection of the black and smokeless powder from the various locations on-site.  All of the powders are being stored in conex box #1.  So far several hundred pounds of smokeless powder and over 100 pounds of black powder have been collected.  The containers are being examined by the ERRG UXO staff to identify the type of powder and its condition.  The powder search so far has been limited to is visible.  Starting tomorrow a more extensive search will be conducted through out the site.

Next Steps
1.  Assessment of the fire impacted area will continue into next week.  The assessment includes segregation of fire damaged live ammunition from empty brass, iventory and HAZCAT of chemical containers, collection of samples as needed and the continued assessment for ordance by the ERRG UXO staff.
2.  EPA and its contractors will begin the search for abandoned gun powders throughout the site including the yard and all buildings.  The powders will be shipped to San Diego for destruction by the San Diego Co. Sheriff's Dept/ Bomb Squad.  All powders will be examined by the ERRG UXO staff for stability prior to transportation.


Key Issues
FBI Bomb Squad has offered to assist in the disposal of the explosive powders and possibly the ammunition at a nearby Federal Facility, possibly DOD.  OSC Wise will be talking to them in the morning about this possibility.

OSC Wise has notified LAPD, LAFD, ATF and LACoFD about the large amount of explosive powders found on-site in case of a fire.
