Site Description
Monday July 6, 2009: At approximately 9 am, a tanker truck was involved in an accident on Route 95N in Newburyport, MA.  As a result, the truck released approximately 8,600 gallons of gasoline onto the road.  The gasoline flowed into the storm drain and an unknown amount entered the Merrimack River.



Current Activities
Since POLREP #4:
Source Area:
-3004 tons of gasoline-contaminated soil have been removed at up to 18.5 feet below grade (in the source area) and sent off-site for asphalt batching.
-Excavation to uncontaminated soil at depth was obtained in all but the release source area.
-Six monitoring wells were advanced in the release area. Only one detected gasoline and at level slightly above the MassDEP Drinking Water standard.
-The release area was backfilled with clean fill.

Storm Sewer:
-The storm sewer and catch basins were cleared of gasoline contaminated solid and liquid during the week of 13-17 July.
-The storm sewer was flushed out and liquids collected on July 21.

Merrimack River:
-Booming and shore operations concluded on July 27.
-Sediment fro various locations along the riverbank were sampled on July 22.
-No further sheen or gasoline odor is observed.  


Planned Removal Actions
RP contractor plans to install additional monitoring wells to characherize grounwater conditions and to periodically test monitoring wells under MassDEP supervision.

Next Steps
RP Contractor will file a report with the MassDEP.

Active oversight/coordination by EPA ended on 7/27/2009. EPA direct, START and ERRS final costs are now available for a final POLREP.


Key Issues
Accurate mass balence of gasoline loss portion to Merrimack River and soil isn't possible.

 
Disposition Of Wastes
All wastes; contaminated soil, sorbent pads, booms and PPE, etc were generate by the RP's contractor, ENPRO, Inc and disposed of by ENPRO. Approximately 3000 tons of gasoline contaminated soil were generated.
