Site Description
Chem-strip removes paint from defective auto parts by use of heating ovens and acid bath.  The fire cause the release of an unknown volume of  pH 2-14 units, acids and bases.  The facility reported no organics or flammables were involved, and the fire was structural.

Current Activities
On December 12, U.S. EPA received notification from the NRC and responded at the request of the Detroit Emergency Management.  OSCs Brian Kelly and James Justices responded and were briefed by the PRP’s contractor EQ.  By the time U.S. EPA was notified the fire was extinguished and run-off contained.

By December 16, EQ had recovered approximately 40,000 gallons of liquid and ten 20-yard roll-off boxes of impacted material.


Planned Removal Actions
The Michigan DEQ will oversee continued cleanup.
