The following actions were taken during the period of record:
Members of Kemron and CMC continued capping of the Pad 6 area. There were a couple of periods of rain and ice that have slowed the progress of putting the clay on the slope. However, the first clay layer was completed during this period. Also, the second clay layer is approximately a third of the way complete. The rip-rap drainage ditch around the base of the Pd 6 slope was also completed during this reporting period. This will allow for any storm water runoff from the slope to be channeled away from the Pad 6 pond and to the Little Fork Creek. To date, 61000 yds3 of clay have been excavated from the borrow pit area and hauled to the Pad 6 area. Also, 2100 tons of rip-rap has been placed. Clay excavation in the borrow pit area will be completed this week and ERRS will begin to grade and dress this area.
During this period members of ERRS capped the area where the erosion products from the waste rock dump area are collecting. This area exhibited the same properties as the area being capped at Pad 6, high concentrations of metals and low pH.
Normal operation of the wastewater treatment system for the acid mine drainage continued. 5.1 million gallons of water have been treated in February, so far. Of this 5.1 million, 4.4 million has been discharged.
The United States Coast Guard was also mobilized to the site by the OSC to provide general site oversight and act as a federal presence for the OSC when unable to be at the site.
The following activities are planned at the site:
-Continue capping the area between the Pad 6 pond and Pad 6.
-Begin to grade and dress the borrow pit area.
-Continue treatment of the acid mine drainage from the Brewer and B-6 pits.
-Continue to coordinate with EPA Region 4 North Site Management Branch on future remedial activities at the site.
Rain at the site will continue to pose a threat of erosion until the capping of the Pad 6 area is complete and erosion control grasses are in place.
