Site Description

Current Activities
During the reporting period, activities at 989 Loflin Hill Road, Lot 28 included placement of 27 loads of backfill and 15 loads of topsoil.  Residents ended temporary relocation on February 24, 2004.
Activities at 989 Loflin Hill Road, Lot 23 included excavation and load out of 15 trucks of contaminated soil to the Uwharrie Environmental Landfill in Mt. Gilead, NC.  Twelve loads of backfill were placed on the property.  Residences at this property began temporary relocation on February 21, 2005.


Planned Removal Actions
The Removal Action at the 8* affected residences will involve a combination of excavation and capping with a barrier of clean soil of up to 2 feet and restoration.  Residents will be relocated while activities are conducted at their residence.
*Results of the August 2004 sampling event identified two properties with arsenic levels above the Removal Action Level of 40 ppm; results of samples collected in February 2005 identified one additional property with arsenic levels above the RAL.


Next Steps
The next steps at 989 Loflin Hill Road, Lot 23 include further excavation, backfill, grading and landscaping.  
The only work remaining at 989 Loflin Hill Road, Lot 28 is landscaping.
Due to weather conditions, some of the most recent areas seeded may have to be re-evaluated.  


Key Issues
A power line was torn down at 989 Loflin Hill Road, Lot 23 by a dump truck as it was unloading backfill.  The downed line was fixed the by the local electric company.
Rain and cold weather make it hard for the grass on the restored properties to grow; this will be a problem for all properties throughout the removal.
