1.1.2 Site Description - Private single family residence and yard

1.1.2.1 Location - 146 Babb Road, Inman, SC

1.1.2.2 Description of Threat - toxicity due to inhalation or ingestion of elemental mercury

1.1.3 Preliminary Removal Assessment/Removal Site Inspection Results - South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control Regional On-Scene Coordinator  Stepahanie Garrett responded to notification of several children playing in their neghborhood where they encountered a small unprotected pool of elemental mercury.  They gathered some of the mercury in their hands and played with it, eventually taking it home to show their parents.  Local Fire, HAZMAT, and EMS responders mobilized to the property to begin defensive actions and care for the exposed children and the parent.

When SOSC Garrett verified the presence of elemental mercury she requested additional State and Federal resources to assess migration of the mercury and mercury contamination as well as to conduct a removal action, as appropriate.  SC DHEC Central office responders, EPA OSC Matt Huyser, consultant OTIE, and removal contractor Environmental Restoration mobilized to the Site with appropriate resources to continue response actions begun by State and local responders.
