1.1.1 Incident Category

1.1.2 Site Description

On Sunday, May 30, The United Parcel Service reported a release to the National Response Center of 52 pounds of chloroform. 

1.1.2.1 Location

The UPS facility is located at 10155 Monroe Drive, Dallas, TX just east of I-35 north of downtown.  The coordinates for the facility are:  Latitude:  32.884002,  Longitude:  -96.881454

1.1.2.2 Description of Threat

The spill involved a damaged package containing (4) 4 liter bottles (52 lbs) of chloroform. The spill occurred inside the facility and was caused by broken caps on the bottles.

All of the liquid was contained within the building; however, fumes from the spill did exit the facility.

There were no injuries due to this spill, and no evacuation required.

The spilled liquid was absorbed by trained UPS responders.  The spilled liquid was solidifed using a clay-based absorbant. 

Liquid remaining in the bottles was solidified with Klexall, a polymer-based absorbant. 

All of the waste is to be disposed of through the UPS hazardous waste contractor.
