2.1.2 Response Actions to Date

On October 31, 2011, Midwest hauled off 1 load (6,200 gal) of oily water from the primary separator pit to the United Waste Water Inc. facility in Cincinnati, OH.

  • Midwest received (2) 50,000 pound loads of wood pulp solidification media from Appleton Papers, Inc. in Dayton, OH.
  • Midwest continued sludge solidifying activities in the solidification pits.
  • Midwest continued cleaning activities in the elevated level of the Solids Building.
  • Midwest began cleaning activities in the two GAC system “raw water” frac tanks located north of the Solids Building.
  • AVS mobilized to the site to begin process pipeline cleaning activities.

On November 1, 2011, Midwest hauled off 1 load (6,200 gal) of oily water from the east containment and frybasket to the United Waste Water Inc.  in Cincinnati, OH.

  • Midwest hauled off (10) 20 cyd roll-off boxes of solidified sludge to Southside Landfill in Indianapolis, IN.
  • Midwest completed cleaning activities in the two rented GAC system “raw water” frac tanks located north of the Solids Building.  These tanks met the "visible product" inspection standard before being demobilized.
  • Midwest mobilized an additional vac truck.  The extra vac truck is being used to move sludge from the million gallon bunker tanks to the solidification pits.
  • AVS started cleaning process piping in the Tank 6 and Tank 7 containment.
  • OSC Verneta Simon and START PM Rick Mehl were on site for a site walk.
  • During the site walk, an unlined roll off box, a roll off box leaking liquid, and incompatible wastes stored together were noticed.  TriHydro and Midwest took action to correct these issues by removing sludge from a roll off box and reinstalling a sagged liner, ensuring that all trucks leaving the Site are inspected for leaking liquids, and segregating incompatible wastes.

On November 2, 2011, Midwest hauled off (17) 20 cyd roll-off boxes of solidified sludge to Southside Landfill in Indianapolis, IN.

  • Midwest received (4) 50,000 pound loads of wood pulp solidification media from Appleton Papers, Inc. in Dayton, OH.
  • Midwest used two vac trucks to collect and transport sludge from the east and west million gallon bunker tanks to the solidification pits.
  • Midwest continued sludge solidifying activities in the solidification pits.
  • Midwest started cleaning the centrifuge platform area east of the solids building.
  • AVS continued cleaning process piping in the Tank 6 and Tank 7 containment.
  • Roger Ward Engineering was on site doing survey work for the permanent stormwater management system.

On November 3, 2011, Midwest hauled off 3 loads (15,948 gal) of oily water from MH-24 and the west solidification pit to the United Waste Water Inc. facility in Cincinnati, OH and the Clean Water Limited Cherokee Drive facility in Dayton, OH.

  • 0.35” of rain fell during the day.  Water pooled above manholes but subsided.  No water was noticed escaping the Site.
  • Midwest received (2) 50,000 pound loads of wood pulp solidification media from Appleton Papers, Inc. in Dayton, OH.
  • Midwest continued cleaning the centrifuge platform area east of the solids building.
  • Midwest powerwashed around the base of the sample station.
  • Midwest cleaned portions of the primary separator.
  • Midwest used two vac trucks to collect and transport sludge from the east and west million gallon bunker tanks to the solidification pits.
  • Current depth to sludge in the bunker tanks were measured: 12’10” – west million gallon bunker tank; 7’10” – east million gallon bunker tank
  • Midwest continued sludge solidifying activities in the solidification pits.
  • AVS continued cleaning process piping in the Tank 6 and Tank 7 containment.
  • Roger Ward Engineering was on site doing survey work for the permanent stormwater management system.

On November 4, 2011, Midwest hauled off 10 loads (56,000 gal) of oily water from MH-23, frac tank 5, the control structure, and the west solidification pit to the United Waste Water Inc. facility in Cincinnati, OH and the Clean Water Limited Cherokee Drive facility in Dayton, OH.

  • Midwest hauled out 4,908 gallons of caustic hazardous waste to Environmental Enterprises Inc. in Cincinnati, OH.
  • Midwest received (2) 50,000 pound loads of wood pulp solidification media from Appleton Papers, Inc. in Dayton, OH.
  • Midwest received (2) loads of lime solidification media.
  • Midwest continued cleaning in the unload building.
  • Midwest used two vac trucks to collect and transport sludge from the east and west million gallon bunker tanks to the solidification pits.
  • Midwest continued sludge solidifying activities in the solidification pits.
  • Midwest replaced the worn out tarp covering the west hole in Tank 51.
  • TriHydro mobilized a new, more robust GAC system.  It will be staged and winterized in the dehydration building.
  • AVS continued cleaning process pipe runs that lead from the primary separator area to Tank 6 and Tank 7.
  • Roger Ward Engineering was on site doing survey work for the permanent stormwater management system.

The wood pulp solidification material is a reclaimed/recycled product.  As of October 28, 2011, approximately 6,000,000 pounds had been used to solidify waste sludge.

An updated figure depicting which vessels have been cleaned is available in the documents section of this website.
