On December 12, 2011, Midwest hauled off (29) 20 cyd roll-off boxes of solidified sludge to Southside Landfill in Indianapolis, IN.
  • Midwest received (4) 25 ton loads of sawdust solidification media Koetter & Smith Inc. in Borden, IN.
  • Midwest received (3) 20 ton loads of lime solidification media from Mintec.
  • Midwest received (3) 50,000 pound loads of wood pulp solidification media from Appleton Papers, Inc. in Dayton, OH.
  • Midwest solidified sludge in the east million gallon bunker tank with the long-reach excavator, a large-bucket excavator and sawdust, lime, and wood pulp solidification media.
  • Midwest continued solidification in the solidification pits with sawdust, lime, and wood pulp solidification media.
  • Midwest cleaned narrow pipes connecting to acid tanks.
  • Midwest used a bobcat to clean up wet solidification media near the solidification pits.
  • EQ received (1) 20 ton load of TerraBond solidification media from Terra Products.
  • EQ continued pumping Tank 51 liquid contents into a solidification box and mixing it with TerraBond solidification media.
On December 13, 2011, Midwest hauled off 4 loads (24,400 gal) of oily water from the control structure to the United Waste Water Inc. facility in Cincinnati, OH.
  • Midwest hauled off (35) 20 cyd roll-off boxes of solidified sludge to Southside Landfill in Indianapolis, IN.
  • Midwest received (5) 25 ton loads of sawdust solidification media from Burton Lumber Co Inc. of Lexington, IN.
  • Midwest received (6) 50,000 pound loads of wood pulp solidification media from Appleton Papers, Inc. in Dayton, OH.
  • Midwest received (2) 20 ton loads of lime solidification media from Mintec.
  • Midwest solidified sludge in the east and west million gallon bunker tank with the long-reach excavators and sawdust, lime, and wood pulp solidification media.
  • Midwest continued solidification in the solidification pits with sawdust, lime, and wood pulp solidification media.    
  • EQ continued pumping Tank 51 liquid contents into a solidification box and mixing it with paper pulp and TerraBond solidification media.
  • Roger Ward Engineering was on site doing survey work to help them prepare their long term stormwater management plan.
  • Trihydro discharged 8,213 gal of northeast area stormwater treated by the GAC system to Oil Creek.
  • AVS demobilized two rented frac tanks.
On December 14, 2011, Midwest hauled off (33) 20 cyd roll-off boxes and (1) 40 cyd roll-off box of solidified sludge to Southside Landfill in Indianapolis, IN. 
  • Midwest received (3) 25 ton loads of sawdust solidification media from Burton Lumber Co Inc. of Lexington, IN.
  • Midwest received (6) 50,000 pound loads of wood pulp solidification media from Appleton Papers, Inc. in Dayton, OH.
  • Midwest received (2) 20 ton loads of lime solidification media from Mintec.
  • Midwest solidified sludge in the east million gallon bunker tank with a long-reach excavator, a large-bucket excavator and sawdust, lime, and wood pulp solidification media.
  • Midwest continued solidification in the solidification pits with sawdust, lime, and wood pulp solidification media.
  • Midwest continued to clean narrow pipes connecting to acid tanks.

On December 15, 2011, Midwest hauled off (16) 20 cyd roll-off boxes and (27) 30 cyd roll-off boxes of solidified sludge to Southside Landfill in Indianapolis, IN. 
  • Approximately 1.8” of rain fell overnight and during the day. 
  • Midwest received (2) 25 ton loads of sawdust solidification media from Burton Lumber Co Inc. of Lexington, IN.
  • Midwest received (7) 50,000 pound loads of wood pulp solidification media from Appleton Papers, Inc. in Dayton, OH.
  • Midwest received (2) 20 ton loads of lime solidification media from Mintec.
  • Midwest continued solidification in the east million gallon bunker tank with a long-reach excavator, a large-bucket excavator and sawdust, lime, and wood pulp solidification media.
  • Midwest continued solidification in the solidification pits with sawdust, lime, and wood pulp solidification media.
  • Midwest continued to clean and disassemble pipes connecting to acid tanks.
  • EQ continued pumping Tank 51 liquid contents into a solidification box and mixing it with paper pulp and TerraBond solidification media.
  • EQ received (2) 50,000 pound loads of wood pulp solidification media from Appleton Papers, Inc. in Dayton, OH.
  • Trihydro discharged 845 gal of northeast area stormwater treated by the GAC system to Oil Creek.
  • Trihydro moved 21,000 gallons of Tank 51 containment water to the frac tank east of Tank 51.
  • OSC Verneta Simon, US EPA Land and Chemical representative Karen Kirchner, and IDEM representative George Ritchotte were on site for a site walk and to discuss upcoming work with the PRP Group/Trihydro.
  • K. Kirchner asked the PRP Group to use TSCA regulation 761 Subpart P to guide their confirmation sampling planning and 761.79(b) to guide their decontamination planning. Tim Gunn of Trihydro agreed to implement these suggestions and will submit an updated Tank 51 Work Plan when finished.
  • OSC Simon asked Trihydro to address Tank 51 containment stormwater planning in the Tank 51 Work Plan.
  • OSC Simon stated that EPA’s goal when leaving the Site is to have a long term stormwater management solution in place that does not require a physical presence for the operation and  maintenance of the site.   
  • OSC Simon asked Trihydro to coordinate with Asphalt Materials, Inc. to pump out water accumulated behind the sandbag berm.
  • OSC Simon requested a preliminary work proposal from the PRP Group for dealing with the bunker tanks since it might not be possible to safely remove the contents of the bunker tanks. The potentially compromised structural integrity of the bunker tanks may cause health and safety issues for personnel entering the tanks.
On December 16, 2011, Midwest hauled off 3 loads (17,200 gal) of oily water from the frac tank containing Tank 51 containment water to the United Waste Water Inc. facility in Cincinnati, OH. 
  • Midwest hauled off (15) 20 cyd roll-off boxes and (28) 30 cyd roll-off boxes of solidified sludge to Southside Landfill in Indianapolis, IN.
  • Midwest received (2) 25 ton loads of sawdust solidification media from Koetter & Smith Inc. in Borden, IN.
  • Midwest received (9) 50,000 pound loads of wood pulp solidification media from Appleton Papers, Inc. in Dayton, OH.
  • Midwest received (2) 20 ton load of lime solidification media from Mintec.
  • Midwest solidified sludge in the east million gallon bunker tank with a long-reach excavator, a large-bucket excavator and sawdust, lime, and wood pulp solidification media.
  • Midwest continued solidification in the solidification pits with sawdust, lime, and wood pulp solidification media.
  • EQ continued pumping Tank 51 liquid contents into a solidification box and mixing it with paper pulp and the remaining TerraBond solidification media. The short-term Tank 51 plan is to continue liquid pumping activities.
  • EQ hauled off (6) 20 cyd roll-off boxes of solidified sludge to Southside Landfill in Indianapolis, IN.
  • Roger Ward Engineering was on site doing survey work to help them prepare their long term stormwater management plan.
  • AVS was on-site to decontaminate the vac truck used for pipeline cleaning activities, including potentially PCB impacted process piping connected to Tank 51. Sampling indicated no PCBs in the vac truck. The contents of the vac truck were emptied into the solidification pit and solidified by Midwest.
  • Trihydro coordinated with Asphalt Materials, Inc. to get water pooled behind the sandbag berm pumped out.
  • Trihydro discharged 4,023 gal of northeast area stormwater treated by the GAC system to Oil Creek.
  • No odor complaints have been placed as a result of the east and west million gallon bunker tank and Tank 51 cleaning activities. Perimeter air monitoring conducted periodically during site activities for H2S, LEL, CO, and VOCs has indicated no levels above background concentrations.
On December 18, 2011, Trihydro was on site in order to treat northeast area stormwater stored in Tank 6 with the GAC system and discharge to Oil Creek.
  • The purpose of the weekend discharge was to create storage capacity for rain/snow in the forecast for the following week. 
  • Due to issues with the GAC system, Trihydro could not treat water and instead pumped additional northeast area stormwater into Tank 6 for  temporary storage.

The wood pulp and sawdust solidification materials are reclaimed/recycled products.  As of December 16, 2011, approximately 10,250,000 pounds of wood pulp solidification media, 1,625 tons of sawdust solidification media have been used to solidify sludge.  Additionally, 760 tons of lime solidification media and 45 tons of TerraBond solidification media had been used to solidify waste sludge.
