2.1.2 Response Actions to Date
On March 12, 2012, 0.1” of precipitation fell over the weekend.
- Midwest continued pumping west bunker tank water into the east bunker tank with two high flow pumps.
- Trihydro resumed treating northeast area storm sewer water with the GAC system and discharging to Oil Creek.
- Trihydro performed a full round of GAC sampling.
- The PRP Group submitted the February Monthly Progress Report to EPA.
On March 13, 2012, no rain fell overnight or during the day.
- Midwest continued pumping west bunker tank water into the east bunker tank with two high flow pumps.
- Midwest pumped northeast area storm sewer water into Tank 6.
- Midwest excavated approximately 4’ of material from behind the west wall of the west bunker tank to relieve pressure on that portion of the degraded wall.
- Midwest began scraping solidified sludge away from the northeast corner of the west bunker tank with a long reach excavator.
- Midwest began power-washing the west section of the control structure.
- Trihydro discharged approximately 27,500 gallons of GAC system treated northeast area stormwater to Oil Creek on 3/12/2012 and 3/13/2012.
- Trihydro sampled water for PCB’s in the pipes leading into the east side of Tank 51.
On March 14, 2012, no rain fell overnight or during the day.
- Midwest began constructing the ramp in the west bunker tank.
- Midwest received 795 tons of sand in 39 loads.
- Midwest continued pumping west bunker tank water into the east bunker tank.
- Midwest pumped northeast area storm sewer water into Tank 6.
- Midwest continued power-washing the west section of the control structure.
- Trihydro discharged approximately 6,000 gallons of GAC system treated northeast area stormwater to Oil Creek.
On March 15, 2012, no rain fell overnight or during the day.
- Midwest continued constructing the ramp in the west bunker tank.
- Midwest began backfilling with the stockpiled limestone.
- Advanced Vacuum Services (AVS) arrived on site to remove oily water from the primary separation pit to United Waste Water Inc.’s facility in Cincinnati, OH.
- A total of 10,960 gallons was removed.
- Trihydro discharged approximately 11,000 gallons of GAC system treated storm water to Oil Creek.
- Midwest received approximately 200 tons of sand in 10 loads.
- Midwest continued pumping west bunker tank water into the east bunker tank.
- Freeland’s Transport LLC arrived on site to remove oily water from the control structure to United Waste Water Inc.’s facility in Cincinnati, OH.
- A total of 12,000 gallons was removed.
On March 16, No rain fell overnight or during the day.
- Midwest finished constructing the ramp in the west bunker tank.
- Trihydro discharged approximately 3,000 gallons of GAC system treated storm water to Oil Creek.
- Midwest vacuumed 4,500 gallons of material out of the control structure
- 3,000 was sludge and 1,500 water
- Best Way Disposal arrived on site to drop off and pick up 20-yd3 roll-offs for sludge removal.
- Sludge transported to South Side Solidification in Indianapolis, IN
- A total of 190 tons was removed in 9 loads.
The wood pulp and sawdust solidification materials are reclaimed/recycled products. As of March 16, 2012, approximately 15,250,000 pounds of wood pulp solidification media and 1,800 tons of sawdust solidification media have been used to solidify sludge. Additionally, 880 tons of lime solidification media and 45 tons of TerraBond solidification media had been used to solidify waste sludge.
As of March 16, 2,259 tons of sand and 1,400 tons of limestone gravel had been placed into the west bunker tank to access the remaining solidified sludge.
