Site Description
Mercury spill at a residence and school.
Location
XXXX Meadowdale Dr, Williamston, MI 48895
Description of Threat
An estimated 1-2 lbs of mercury were spilled by a 12-year old inside his home and in a school parking lot. The child had possession of the mercury starting around May. The boy is under going medical treatment due to mercury exposure. The mercury was brought to the residence after the sale of a family member's home.
Preliminary Removal Assessment/Removal Site Inspection Results
Ingham County Health Department found mercury as high as 25,000 ng/m3 in a duffel bag inside the child's room. Other areas of the house including the bedrooms of two other children showed mercury had been tracked from the child's room to other rooms of the house. The Health Department also found mercury in the school parking lot where the child said the mercury vial had been dropped.
Due to the severity of the medical condition, Michigan Department of Community Health recommended a breathing zone clearance level of 200 ng/m3 (ATSDR guidance is 1,000 ng/m3) for the child.

Response Actions to Date
At the request of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Ingham County Health Department, EPA responded to cleanup the spilled mercury.
Between 10/18 and 10/19, EPA screened and removed bedding, carpeting, and mercury contaminated items from the house. The mercury levels were found to be as high as 69,000 ng/m3 on the sweeper and 2,000 ng/m3 in the breathing zone. Items above 10,000 ng/m3 were disposed of. Items between 1,000 and 10,000 ng/m3 are being stored in the garage to be rescreened by Ingham County Health Department.
The house passed final clearance on 10/20/2013 and final disposal occurred on 11/6/2013.
