On May 23,
2014, two tractor trailers, one carrying approximately 40,000 lbs of
oil and grease products collided on the bridge and were fully engulfed
in fire. There was one fatality. On-Scene Coordinator (OSC) Francendese,
Alabama Department of Environmental Management State OSC and United
States Coast Guard (USCG) Sector Mobile responded. Minimal amounts of
oil left the bridge and entered the river below. River assessment teams
determined that the amount of oil that entered the river was
non-recoverable. Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) contracted
with a response contractor through their emergency response program to
remediate the scene. OSC Francendese demobilized and ADEM State OSC
provided oversight of remaining clean-up operations.
