2. Current Activities
  2.1 Operations Section
   

2.1.1 Narrative
Construction of staging areas, access roads and support areas in BRSAs 4, 6 & 9 continues.  Construction activities began in BRSA 3 in preparation for excavation of contaminated riverbank soils, which is expected to commence in mid-May.

2.1.2 Response Actions During Reporting Period

The following activities took place during the reporting period:
- Bank build-out and rock placement to support dredging/excavation operations in BRSA 3 (see photo);
- Monitoring & maintenance of erosion controls (due to impacts of high water) along access roads in BRSAs 3, 4, 6 & 9;
- Land clearing and brush chipping in BRSAs 4, 6 & 9;
- Maintenance on plantings to correct issues associated with flooding in BRSA 1 (see photo);
- Environmental monitoring for particulate (dust) in air and turbidity (suspended solids) in water around active work areas; and
- Monitoring & maintenance of the temporary WCS and ice boom.

2.2.1 Anticipated Activities
During the next reporting period, the following activities are expected to occur:

- Contaminated riverbank soil excavation in BRSA 3;
- Construction of staging area, stabilization pad & wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in BRSA 4; and
- Removal of floating ice boom in front of temporary WCS.

2.2.1.1 Planned Response Activities

2.2.1.2 Administrative Activities / Next Steps
- AMEC-FW will provide a revised draft TM for BRSAs 4, 6 & 9 incorporating US EPA comments to the BRSAs 6 & 9 sections of the document.
- Planning meetings continue on a draft TM for BRSAs 7 & 8, which will include plans for removal of the temporary WCS.
- Planning is underway on a draft restoration plan for the spillway area adjacent to the temporary WCS.

2.2.2 Issues
- Work crews assisted in search operations for a missing person in the Kalamazoo River on April 6.  The missing person was found on April 24 upstream of the work area.

2.5.1 Safety Officer

A safety meeting is held prior to start of work each day. The meeting is led by on-site safety officer(s) representing both Envirocon and AMEC-FW.

- US EPA continues to meet with residents neighboring the project area to provide updates on construction plans for 2017 and answer questions relating to the project.
- A media availability session was held by Michigan DNR on April 24. Various members of the press and a representative from Congressman Fred Upton's office (see photo) attended.
