Summary - To date, approximately 9,500 tons of material has been removed and sent offsite for disposal. 

December 1, 2011 - Removal operations continued.  37 dump trucks were loaded and sent offsite with approximately 555 tons of material.  Perimeter and personnel air sampling continued.  No asbestos was detected in the perimeter air samples. Two personnel samples from the exclusion zone contained asbestos at 0.00098 fibers/cc.  This level is far below the OSHA PEL for Asbestos (0.1 fibers/cc) and ABS site clean up level of 0.02 fibers/cc.

December 2, 2011 - Removal operations continued.  30 dump trucks were loaded and sent offsite with approximately 450 tons of material.  No asbestos was detected in the perimeter air samples.  One personnel sample from the exclusion zone contained asbestos at 0.00098 fibers/cc.  This level is far below the OSHA PEL for Asbestos (0.1 fibers/cc) and ABS site clean up level of 0.02 fibers/cc.

OSC Terry Stilman and START met with W.R. Grace, DeKalb County, URS, AECOM, and the South Fork Conservancy to discuss site drainage, retention basin and final grading.

December 5, 2011 -  Removal operations continued.  41 dump trucks were loaded and sent offsite with approximately 615 tons of material.  Perimeter and personnel sampling continues. No asbestos was detected in personnel or perimeter air samples.  EPA Environmental Response Team Member, Phil Campagna spent the day on-site and reviewed the site sampling and air monitoring plans.  At his recommendation, the VIPER system was requested.  This system provides real time, remote monitoring of the ambient dust monitors currently in use on the site.

A main hydraulic line ruptured on the excavator at 1530 hours, removal operations were stopped for the day.  The tree shredding/chipping began.  OSC Eichinger met with the property management firm for the adjacent property to discuss using an access road that runs between Zonolite Place and Zonolite Road.  Approval was granted.  The road was improved and drainage systems planned.  The road will be restored to the property management firm specifications at the conclusion of the project.

December 6, 2011 - Removal operations continued.  43 dump trucks were loaded and sent offsite with approximately 645 tons of material.  Perimeter and personnel sampling continues.  No asbestos was detected in the perimeter air samples.  One personnel sample from the exclusion zone contained asbestos at 0.00097 fibers/cc.  This level is far below the OSHA PEL for Asbestos (0.1 fibers/cc) and ABS site clean up level of 0.02 fibers/cc.
 
DeKalb County provided sewer diagrams, no storm or sanitary systems will be impacted by the project.  Tree shredding/chipping continued.

December 7, 2011 - Rainy weather prevented soil removal. Site drainage was addressed and tree shredding/chipping was completed.  Chipped trees will be stored on-site for later use by Dekalb County.  The haul roads were improved.  Results on the material in the abandoned drum was received and reviewed.  Material was non-hazardous and will managed appropriately.  

December 8, 2011 - Removal operations continued.  16 dump trucks were loaded and sent offsite with approximately 240 tons of material.  A hydraulic line ruptured on the excavator which cut removal operations short for the day.  Perimeter and personnel air sampling continues. No asbestos was detected in the perimeter or the personnel air samples.   The VIPER system was setup and the particulate air monitoring data was sent to the ERT server.  Results of the backfill material was received and reviewed.  The material was approved to be used a back fill.

December 9, 2011 - Removal operations continued.  45 dump trucks were loaded and sent offsite with approximately 675 tons of material.  Perimeter and personnel air sampling continued.  The Northwest perimeter sample contained asbestos at 0.0014 fibers/cc.  This level is far below the ABS site clean up level of 0.02 fibers/cc.  Crews will implement additional controls and modify wetting operations.  

December  10, 2011 - Crews removed the soil and cleaned the existing concrete/blacktop pad in the Southeast corner of the exclusion zone.  Polyethylene sheeting was laid and the clean mulch was located to this area and covered for use by DeKalb County in the future.

December 12, 2011 - Removal operations continued.  48 dump trucks were loaded and sent offsite with approximately 720 tons of material.  Perimeter and personnel air sampling continued.  No asbestos was detected in the perimeter samples.   One personnel sample from the exclusion zone contained asbestos at 0.00097 fibers/cc.  This level is far below the OSHA PEL for Asbestos (0.1 fibers/cc) and ABS site clean up level of 0.02 fibers/cc.

December 13, 2011 - Removal operations continued.  47 dump trucks were loaded and sent offsite with approximately 705 tons of material.  Perimeter and personnel air sampling continued.

December 14, 2011 - Removal operations continued.  50 dump trucks were loaded and sent offsite with approximately 750 tons of material.  Perimeter and personnel air sampling continues.  DeKalb County representatives visited the site to check on the progress and to discuss the status of the site grading plan.  DeKalb County will attempt to deliver the final plan as soon as possible.  The equipment rental company met with the Site Superintendent on-site to discuss recent equipment failures.  Superfund Division Director, Franklin Hill, was provided a site summary and tour.  Technical Services Branch Chief, Glen Adams, Toxicologist Tim Frederick and Geologist Ben Bentkowski, OSC Eichinger and START discussed the confirmation sample plan.  The current plan will need to be modified to account for the additional size of the site, the final grading plan and the South Fork Conservancy's conceptual plan for the park.
