2. Current Activities
  2.1 Operations Section
   
  • 2.1.1 Narrative

    EPA has transitioned from the Emergency Response Phase of the project into the Time-Critical Removal Phase. However, the dangers at the Site continue to pose an immediate threat to human health and the environment. The current focus at the Site is to mitigate the immediate threats of release from the Site to off-site migration pathways. EPA's estimated time to complete the removal is approximately March 1, 2012.

    2.1.2 Response Actions to Date

    To date the following response activities were completed during this reporting period:
  • ERRS concentrated their efforts in excavating the slope south of building 1 and a portion of the creek that is adjacent to that slope area. The majority of the creek bottom tested below 40 ppm for arsenic, after the 2-foot excavation in the area.  Some areas still showed elevated values (95ppm) and required further excavation. This portion of the creek had As levels about our action levels.  Fortunately, the contamination was trapped in an approximate 200 foot section of the creek and there is no evidence of high levels of As beyond this point. The sloping soil approaching the creek from the east required another foot or excavation due to levels ranging from 80 to 423 ppm with the XRF.  Soils along the slope are below the removal action levels.
  • Three more stockpiles of contaminated soils failed the TCLP test for cadmium and will need to be treated before being disposed in a landfill..  These piles are associated with the area that was excavated around the septic tank behind building 1.  This brings a total of 2,500 cubic yards of soil that will need to be treated.
  • EPA ERRS's waste disposal subcontractor removed the remaining Household Hazardous waste (HHW)from site.  
  • Other Activities Involving the Site: USACE came by the Site to inspect our creek excavation and were glad to see the creek sedimentation be below our removal action levels. 
  • ERRS and START demobilized from the Site for the Thanksgiving Holiday on November 23 and will mobilize to the Site on November 28.

2.2.1 Anticipated Activities

2.2.1.1 Planned Response Activities

The following activities are planned during the next reporting period:
  • Excavate the remaining contaminated soils that are under a dirt road that went from the from the southern side of the property to the back portion of the property.  This roads served as access from the excavation areas to areas where the contaminated was being stockpiled. 
  •  Air particulates will be monitored in the vicinity of the excavation and the slope will be kept wet during the excavation process.
  • Prepare building 1 and 2 for demolition
  • Obtain bids for treatment of contaminated soils that have failed for Cd for waste disposal purposes.

  • Excavation and stockpiling of contaminated soils
  • Demolition of contaminated structures.

2.2.2 Issues

Now that all of the dangerous chemicals have been removed from the Site, EPA will focus on removing contaminated soils that contain As.  EPA will continue to work closely with local, state, and county officials throughout the cleanup process.
