1.1.2 Site Description
Seven train cars are derailed; 3 boxcars, 3 loaded auto racks and 1 tank car (UTLX 640074) loaded with dicyclopentadiene. The tank car was holed at the bottom outlet valve and situated with its dome at the 3 o'clock position. An estimated 24,000 gallons of product has been released from the breached tank car.

The spill occurred in an agricultural field north of the rail line and into an adjacent drainage ditch. Per CN, no other dangerous goods are involved in the derailment at this time.
 
The closest waterway is Little Tallahatchie river less than 1/4 mile south of the derailment. There are no signs of waterway impact.

No residents have been impacted by the derailment or release of the dicyclopentadiene.


1.1.2.1 Location
The derailment occurred adjacent to Bellchase Road in Minter, DeFlore County Mississippi.

1.1.2.2 Description of Threat
Dicyclopentadiene is a CERCLA listed hazardous substance. It is hazardous when in contact with skin (irritant), eye (irritant), inhalation and digestion.

1.1.3 Preliminary Removal Assessment/Removal Site Inspection Results
Upon arrival on scene, contractors for the PRP have begun clearing the wreckage. The site has been secured by Leflore County Sheriff Department. The release has been contained and recovery has begun. Air quality is continues being monitored onsite for worker safety and off site for residents.

OSC arrived on scene and began assessing the derailment and overseeing cleanup activities.  Off site air quality monitoring began at 0600 on 31 March doing passive and active monitoring for benzene and dicyclopentadiene on and off site for worker and resident safety. Air monitoring and health and safety plans have been developed for the cleanup activities.

Cleanup crews began installing interceptor trenches to collect product saturated in the soils.
