The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 Superfund conducted groundwater sampling activities at the Acme Battery site in St. Louis, Missouri on June 30, 2004. The subject property, currently owned by the St. Louis Land Reutilization Agency, is the location of a former battery manufacturer (Acme Battery) that operated at this location from 1963 to 1998. The Acme Battery site is a rectangular parcel of land occupying approximately 2.5 acres, and measuring approximately 250 feet by 450 feet (see Appendix A, Figure 2 for the current site layout).

Shallow groundwater had never been identified on site prior to the Brownfields Targeted Assessment (BTA) conducted in October 2003. Prior attempts during previous investigations to sample groundwater on site failed to encounter groundwater. However, groundwater was found at one location during the BTA. The groundwater sample was found to contain elevated levels of arsenic, chromium, and lead. Additional sampling was required to further delineate groundwater contamination by metals detected in October 2003. The objective of this investigation was to attempt to collect up to five additional groundwater samples from various areas on and off site for total dissolved metals analysis.

The groundwater results were compared to the Cleanup Levels for Missouri (CALM) groundwater target concentrations. All results except for lead were reported below detection limits. Lead was present at approximately 7 times its CALM standard of 15 micrograms per liter (µg/L). Based on the results from the groundwater sample, it appears to have been impacted by past on-site activities. No metals were detected in the field blank sample.
