The Anderson Springs site consists of three residential properties affected by the 2015 Valley Wildfire that swept through Lake County. The wildfire destroyed 76067 acres and 1958 structures including 1280 residences. On September 27, 2015, the Governor of California, Edmund G. Brown Jr., issued an Executive Order to initiate cleanup of fire debris and ash in Lake County. The debris removal program is managed by California's Debris Management Program's Dept. of Resource Recycling and Recovery (CALRECYCLE). Due to the presence of mercury above the threshold for CA hazardous waste on all three sites, CALRECYCLE cannot undertake a removal and has requested EPA's assistance in conducting a removal. It is unknown how the site became contaminated with mercury but the site is located at the base of a hill that had several mercury mines that operated from the mid-1800s to the 1960s so runoff from the mines for 100+ years is believed to have contributed to the site.
