On the morning of March 14, 2014, Buckeye Pipeline reported a release of gasoline from the vicinity of two 8-inch pipelines (162 and 163) near the intersection of State Route 113 and Indian Trail Road, Kankakee, Kankakee County, Illinois 60691. The release was estimated at 500 gallons. There is a drainage ditch located west of the suspected release location which leads to the Kankakee River which is located approximately 0.5 miles to the North. A residential community is also located approximately 0.25 miles to the North. There no reports of impacts to the Kankakee River.
Buckeye personnel indicated that gasoline odors were detected along the drainage ditch however, the did not detect free product. Buckeye personnel indicated that the pipelines were depressurized. The residential community to the North is supplied through well water. The Kankakee County EMA notified residents of the activity and concerns however, evacuations were not ordered.
Buckeye Pipeline has deployed sausage boom and containment boom in the drainage ditch and have deployed a boat to install containment at the confluence of the drainage ditch and the Kankakee River as a precaution. Buckeye Pipeline has initiated a search for underground utilities and intends to excavate impacted soils on the morning of March 14, 2014. Buckeye Pipeline has also mobilized air monitoring and groundwater monitoring support.
