EPA received notification through the National Response Center on 7/12/07 that an oil sheen was observed on the Shetucket River in Norwich, Connecticut. The source of the oil was traced back to an abandoned mill known as the Capehart Mill off North Main Street near the end of Fifth Street. The oil was coming from tunnels under the mill. The Town of Norwich has hired a cleanup contractor, Clean Harbors, and the HAZMAT team from the Navy Sub Base in Groton, CT attempted to make an entry into the tunnels to locate the source of the oil. CT DEP is currently on scene overseeing the Town's actions, and two OSCs, Tom Hatzopoulos and Wing Chau were sent to the scene to assist. Also on-scene were several other nearby local fire departments and the U.S. Coast Guard.
