On 10/22/2010 TEL received an NRC report of a residential mercury spill in Whitsett, NC. The resident reportedly hired an environmental contractor to evaluate and contain the release; the contractor advised the family to both quarantine & vent the room and bag all contaminated clothes & shoes, but then the contractor left the container of mercury at the site and was unable to conduct an adequate clearance of the home due to insufficient instrumentation. The room has been sealed and EPA has been in contact with NC Department of Public Health regarding further response efforts. Outposted OSC Rhame and RIT OSCs Garrard and Ball will mobilize to the site on 10/25/2010 for assessment and will coordinate with NC Department of Public Health and NCDENR.
