EPA is conducting a Time-Critical Removal Action at the Circle DE Lumber Site in coordination with the State and at the request of the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ). The Circle DE Lumber Site is located at 3121 Crosby Street (97603-5733) in Klamath Falls, Oregon, in Klamath County.
This Time-Critical Removal Action seeks to address the contamination located at the site's historic dip tank area. The principal contaminant of concern is Pentachlorophenol (PCP), a typical constitutent of which is dioxin. PCP wood-treating solution is regulated as F032, a listed hazardous waste.
The site is located in an area of mixed use with residential dwellings south of the site and across the street (Crosby Avenue).
Approximately 103.7 cubic yards of F032 contaminated soils are estimated to be associated with the Dip Tank area.
Subsurface soil samples collected from 0 to 4 feet bgs in this area had PCP results greater than 200 times the EPA Region 9 Industrial PRGs for soil. Removal of these contaminated soils will reduce airborne and direct contact pathway migration and reduce further groundwater intrusion.
EPA will remove and properly dispose of the dip tank structure (debris) and contaminated soils around the dip tank area; install monitoring wells to determine degree and extent of subsurface groundwater contamination; and evaluate the need for further sampling.
EPA is expecting to conduct on site work over a two week time period.
