At 0310hrs on 6/14/2010, the R4 North Carolina Outpost OSC Rhame received a call from the Operations center in NC that a tank containing 20,000bbls of gasoline caught fire at the Colonial Pipeline breakout tank farm facility in Greensboro; the tank had been struck by lightning at approximately 0100hrs on 6/14/2010. OSC Rhame informed EPA telephone duty of the incident; after speaking with the NC EOC, TEL duty received a request to support site activities with air monitoring. OSC Huyser was deployed from a site in Easley, SC and R1 OSC Patel was deployed from Atlanta, GA. The fire was extinguished with 1,700 gallons of foam at 0615, before EPA responders arrived. OSC Huyser participated in the 0900 briefing and conducted a site walkthrough with Colonial Pipeline and Guilford County Environmental Division to provide oversight of the environmental monitoring and firefighting water discharge procedures.
