The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is conducting removal response activities at the Cosmechem facility located on North Warwick Avenue, in Baltimore, Maryland.
In April 2004, at the request of the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE), EPA conducted a site assessment to determine if a risk to human health and the environment existed at the abandoned facility. The site assessment also helped determine the site’s eligibility for a removal action under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), also known as the EPA Superfund program.
The Cosmechem Site is an abandoned facility on approximately 0.8 acres of land. From 1992 until 1997, Cosmechem Company manufactured products such as industrial-strength cleaning chemicals, de-greasers,
graffiti removers, carpet cleaners, tile bathroom cleaners, metal cleaners, drain cleaners, and wood floor strippers.
The site is about 40 yards from residential row homes. Also nearby are active local businesses. Some of the materials used in the manufacturing process of chemical-based cleaners are still present onsite. EPA is addressing the risk to human health and the environment posed by these chemicals by removing them from the site for recycling, reuse, or proper disposal.
