The Site is approximately 0.26-acre, vacant lot located in a residential neighborhood of Methuen, Massachusetts (MA). The site is bordered by a wooded area and residential properties. On 18 December 2015, the PRP excavated the central portion of the property for a residential building and stockpiled the materials on the southwestern portion of the property. The PRP hired an environmental firm to test the pile for contaminants for removal from the site. The analytical results from the stockpile indicated elevated levels of lead total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In addition, asbestos was detected in one of the samples. In April 2017, MassDEP inspected the site and took additional samples of the pile. Sample Results indicated asbestos containing materials (ACM) were comingled in the pile. On 20 April 2017, MassDEP referred the Site to the USEPA Region 1 Removal Program for further assistance. A PA/SI was conducted on 23 June 2017, results indicated ACM comingled in the pile, along with several elevated levels of (PAHs), and Lead. EPA will coordinate with the enforcement team and management on next steps.
