The Former American Thread Company (FATCO) manufactured spool cotton & hosiery yarn until 1986 when the property was sold. Prior to 1949, 3 to 4 tons of coal ash was generated per day from the boilers & deposited on the northern portion of the Site.
At the request of Representative Susan M. Johnson, state of Connecticut, USEPA conducted several site investigations to identify contaminants and the extent of contamination on the Site. High levels of heavy metals (mainly lead & arsenic) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were found in the surface soils.
A Potential Responsible Party (PRP) has been identified and USEPA has been working with them to develop a removal action strategy for the Site. Confirmation sampling and baseline bioavailability sampling has been conducted. Bench scale testing for soil amendments will be conducted in the near future.
Mobilization to the Site is planned for late summer 2013.
