On 10/10/08, OSC Spurlin was contacted by Jackson-Madison Co. Emergency Management Agency who requested EPA respond to the scene of a Fed-Ex Truck wreck which occurred on 10/6/08 at mile marker 70 on I-40 near Jackson, Madison County, Tennessee. The wreck resulted in the spillage of diesel fuel, paint pigments, and various solid waste materials including fluorescent light tubes. Fed-Ex hired an environmental contractor and a towing company to remove the truck and conduct cleanup; however, the contractors demobilized before completing the cleanup. Heavy rain on 10/7/08 contacted residual pigment resulting in a discolored discharge into Cypress creek. After observing the site conditions, OSC Spurlin contacted Fed-Ex and indicated additional work was needed. Fed-Ex contacted Hepaco who responded to the scene on 10/11/08 to continue cleanup efforts. OSC Spurlin continues to monitor cleanup efforts and coordinate with State and local agencies.
