The Former Waterbury Clock Factory site is currently being investigated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). EPA is focusing on three buildings in particular 177 Cherry Street, 215 Cherry Street and 39 Cherry Avenue. EPA has reason to believe during the early 1900's through the 1940's the former Waterbury Clock Factory had used Radium during the manufacturing process of its clocks. Radium is a radioactive material that was used in painting dials on clocks because it makes paint glow in the dark.
EPA is coordinating with the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH), CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CTDEEP), the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
