On March 29, 2012, a student at Heron Creek Middle School broke a Sling Psychrometer in a science classroom. The teacher isolated the spill and evacuated the room. The Sarasota County School Board contracted a cleanup contractor to perform removal operations on the evening of March 29, 2012.
On March 30, 2012, EPA Region 4 Florida Outpost OSC Chris Russell was advised of the spill. At the request of FDEP Bureau of Emergency Response Personnel, OSC Russell mobilized to the site to provide oversight of cleanup operations.
