The Indiana Battery Company Site was the location of a retail battery sales store from approximately 1962 until 2008.
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) received a citizen complaint that 'truckloads' of batteries had been buried at the Site. EPA conducted site investigations and confirmed buried lead acid battery related wastes were used in buried fill at the Site. Wastes contain elevated lead and arsenic which are hazardous substances.
On April 12, 2018, EPA began a removal action to excavate wastes and install a clean fill cover to prevent contact with contaminated soil and prevent its movement to Eagle Creek. The agency expects the cleanup will take about 60 working days. Eagle Creek Trail will be temporary closed during the cleanup.
