The Jim’s Dry Cleaners site is located at 110 Aroostook Avenue, Millinocket, Penobscot County, ME. The geographical coordinates at the approximate center of the site are 45.6542 north latitude and -68.7080 west longitude. The site consists of two properties: Lot 172, which comprises the former Jim’s Dry Cleaners building, an attached occupied apartment, and paved areas; and Lot 171, which abuts the site to the north, was formerly the location of a Laundromat, and is currently an empty lot with a large concrete pad. The site is bordered to the north by residential and commercial properties and Pine Street; to the south by a church and residential properties; to the east by Aroostook Avenue and residential properties; and to the west by commercial properties and Penobscot Avenue. The site operated as a dry cleaning facility and Laundromat prior to 2007, although exact dates of operation are currently unknown.
The site was referred to EPA by Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MEDEP) due to volatile organic compounds (VOC) detected in the indoor air. EPA samples detected tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE) in excess of EPA Region 1 regional screening levels (RGL) and the (MEDEP) screening levels for unrestricted residential use.
