Jimmy's Tire and Salvage Company is a commercial tire salvage/repair company located at 1215 K St. NE, Washington DC. An estimated 30,000 tires were reported to be stored on a small lot within a residential urban environment.
On January 21, 2008, in the afternoon, a fire erupted at this facility causing a large number of the tires to burn. DC Fire Department responded and worked around the clock to suppress this fire with copious amounts of water. All runoff was collected in an onsite pit, treated and passed onto WASA. Cause of the fire is unknown officially.
Late on January 22, 2008 the DC Department of the Environment - Air Quality Division (DCDOE) requested EPA assistance specific to air monitoring and possibly some air sampling. On January 23, 2008 EPA mobed two OSCs and its Start contractor to support DCDOE's request for assistance. EPA OSCs and Start contractor maintained this onsite support to the DC DOE and the DC Fire Department until the fire was declared out on January 24, 2008. EPA OSC provided all his air monitoring data directly to the DCDOE.
