On March 30, 2018, a Union Pacific train carrying diesel fuel, propane and phosphoric acid among other things derailed in rural Juab County, Utah. A total of 24 rail cars were impacted and several were leaking their contents. Several local Fire Departments, EMS, Law Enforcement, Utah County Emergency Management, the American Red Cross, the State of Utah's Fire Marshall's Office, National Guard Civil Support Team, Union Pacific, various Union Pacific response contractors, Federal Railroad Administration and US EPA all responded to the incident.
The primary concern of the response team were the propane cars which showed signs of instability and present a danger to the responders. A specialized team was mobilized to intentionally breach and thermally treat each of the propane and diesel cars. On March 31, 2019 the thermal breach occurred and was successful. USEPA OSCs visually surveyed the area surrounding the acid car after and confirmed there was no visible release.
