On 5/12/05, at approximately 0200 hours PST, EPA Duty Officer was notified by the Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) of a tire fire at Junior's Trucking on Beacon Coal Mine Road in the Skyway area between South Seattle and Renton. Pyrolytic runoff from the burning tires and firefighting runoff were reportedly entering the nearby Duwamish River. The tire pile size is estimated at 50 ft x 50 ft x 30 ft high. EPA OSC Boykin was dispatched at approximately 0600, along with Ecology, Washington State Patrol, King County Fire District 20, Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, and King County enforcement personnel. The fire was extinguished morning of 5/12/05. Most runoff from pyrolitic decomposition of the tires and firefighting activities was contained in on-site retention ponds. An unknown amount of runoff made its way into an adjacent creek which empties into the Duwamish River. EPA START collected samples of runoff.
