On September 14th, EPA Region 4 received notification of a spill of 7,000 gallons of used oil from a facility in Shelby North Carolina as the result of vandalism. The oil has impacted the ditch and road side immediately outside of the facility, and is threatening Hickory Creek which leads to the Broad River. The spill impacted a storm drain that leads to Hickory Creek. The City of Shelby and Cleveland County Fire deployed emergency defensive measures. EPA contractors were mobilized to prevent release of oil during inclement weather and to remediate the spill.
