A residential home located at 155 West Traverse Lake Rd, Maple City, Michigan has recently undergone mitigation for hydrogen sulfide contamination. Reportedly, lake levels became elevated and the homeowner installed a sump pump in the crawl space of their home. After smelling a foul, rotten egg like odor in their home, the local health department was contacted. A local contractor was contacted, identified elevated levels of hydrogen sulfide in the home. The sump crock was sealed and a water drainage system was installed to move water away from the home. The local health department contacted the Michigan dept of Community Healt which in turn asked EPA to assist with determination of the source of the H2S and whether there may be a threat of tocicity or/fire/explosion for other residential locations along the lake shore EPA investigated hydrogen sulfide and methane levels in the air in the home and from discharge water collected from the home drainage system. Water, soil gas, ambient air, and indoor air were investigated to evaluate the potential environmental impacts and/or threat to human health posed by H2S ( or it's generation precursors) at the site.
