From early in the twentieth century to the 1980s, the Lewis Wolman Company was a metal scrap yard under the ownership of one family. The facility ceased operation in the 1980s and most of the visible scrap metal was removed. In total, the Site encompasses 2 acres of land. The Site is bounded to the south and across a street by Ace Tire Company, to the east and west by at least four residential properties that have contamination in their yards, and to the north by the George J. Mitchel K-3 Public School. The Site has a stream that flows south to the Kennebec River. The facility is inactive, and has a temporary fence.
Sampling and analysis indicates that lead and PCB surface soil contamination is widespread throughout the Site. Results showed PCB levels of up to 6,900 Mg/Kg and lead up to 4,250 Mg/Kg.
