The Morrow Power Plant site is the home of a former coal fire power plant in Comstock Township, Michigan. The site is located at the west end of Morrow Lake along the Kalamazoo River.
After shutting down as a power plant in the 1980's, and undergoing several property transfers, the site ended up as essentially a scrap yard that was purchased at an auction for tax reverted properties. In the last few years, metal was removed from site by people scrapping it. This scrapping activity caused the release of several thousand cubic yards of friable asbestos which remains a hazard of release to the environment and surrounding workers.
EPA action at this site are limited to reducing the risk of exposure to the adjacent properties, removal of only the easily accessible friable asbestos, and securing the building with deterents and signage to make tresspass difficult and to inform anyone approaching the building of the inherent dangers within.
