On August 4, 2018, the Georgia Poison Control Center reported a mercury spill at a residential home in Thomas County, Georgia. Approximately 16 fluid ounces were spilled in a child's bedroom. The spill occurred approximately 2 weeks prior. Three children and their mother were admitted to the hospital exhibiting mercury poisoning symptoms.
EPA Florida Outpost OSC Chris Russell, ERRS and START contractors responded to the residence to assess the extent of contamination and to conduct an emergency response removal action.
