On September 17th, 2013, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management requested EPA assistance in performing a vapor intrusion assessment at Nu Process Cleaners Site located at 930 W 14th Street, Anderson, Madison County, Indiana, 46016. The Site is a former dry cleaner that operated in the 1980s. Prior to operating as a dry-cleaner the site was a gas station. It was reported by area residents that former underground storage tanks that were in place when the site was a gas station were used to dispose of spent dry-cleaning chemicals. It was also reported that when the underground tanks were removed as part of a UST closure that the bottoms of the tanks were so rusted and deteriorated that they ruptured dumping the contents of the tanks into the excavation.
IDEM performed a Preliminary Assessment for the Site. IDEM also collected limited subsurface soil sampling at in June, 2013, indicating the presence of chlorinated solvents in excess of IDEM regulatory levels. IDEM is concerned that residents located in direct proximity to the Site may be affected by vapor intrusion (VI).
EPA is performing a removal site assessment for vapor intrusion. EPA mobilized START contractors the week of November 12th to perform groundwater, soil gas and sub-slab sampling.
